China has been determined to develop the financial services industry on the mainland.
In 1990 it created a new stock market in Shanghai to rival Hong Kong.
Open mainly to domestic investors, it is now in the midst of an unprecedented boom.
China boosted its own banking sector, and increased regulation, especially after the banks got into difficulties over bad loans to state firms.
And it is gradually opening up the financial sector to international firms, with foreign banks now being allowed to open yuan accounts for domestic residents.

That’s the response I generally get when asking people about what has happened to the British in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong still has double-decker buses, trams, hotels serving high tea, a district called Aberdeen and Victoria Peak, and Victoria Park and Victoria Harbour.
But what of the Brits themselves? There are fewer of them these days, but those who remain have no regrets.
“Hong Kong has been my home for years. I arrived in 1948 and I loved the life here,” said Peter Malpas, 88.

A couple of hours later, a second, very different rally began, filling the streets of Causeway Bay and Wanchai as tens of thousands of people, ten deep, marched for democracy. Here the mood was more serious and the banners home-made.
Some sections were organised by specific unions, others by political parties.
When I stopped people to ask why they were marching, their answers were varied. Some wanted a more just society, led by a more socially responsible government.
Some wanted better pay for their industry – for teachers, for example, who were out in force.
Others wanted to send a political message to the mainland that Hong Kong could be the tail that wagged the dog, as far as political change was concerned.

Blog:Help! I’m a Beatles hater2009.10.28. // news

The re-release of the entire Beatles album catalogue has unleashed another wave of veneration for the 60s pop band. But could there really be anyone who actively dislikes their music?
James Bond apparently hated The Beatles.
In Goldfinger, he advises Jill Masterson that “drinking Dom Perignon ‘53 above the temperature of 38 degrees” is “as bad as listening to The Beatles without earmuffs”.
The Bond girl’s own verdict on the Fab Four, unfortunately, is not recorded before her untimely demise on the inside of a coating of gold paint.
That was 1964, when 007 may have felt threatened by that year’s global success of The Beatles’ first movie, A Hard Day’s Night.

Blog: Ugg Boots in United States2009.10.28. // Boots

Many people, mostly Americans, believe that the cheap ugg classic Mini is, well, a fad. But, it has actually been around for many years. It was simply the way boots were made in Australia. But, how did the Ugg Boots make it to the United States? How did it become so popular, so fast in the United States?
The UGG Classic Cardy made it to the United States back in 1978 when a man named Brian Smith decided to take a gamble and see if this unique, yet fantastic boot could make it in the United States. It was a chance because the Australian was worried that the UGG Classic Short Boots was too much of quirky Australian design to make a hit in the US.
Since then, though, the UGG Classic Crochet Boots has skyrocketed in sales and it is well loved throughout the United States and in other markets as well.
Throughout the course of years, there have been many different manufacturers making the Ugg Boot. There have been knock offs as well as other well known spin offs of the Ugg Boot as well.It is very warm and offers a great level of comfort and softness.

Microsoft launched the consumer versions of Windows Vista on 30 January and anyone buying a PC since that date is likely to have it installed on their brand new machine.
Many are thought to have suffered the same problem as Swansea-based Rob Evans who found that he could not use his existing Virgin Media account with his new PC from Tesco.
After ringing Virgin for help he was told that Vista support may not be forthcoming for some time.
A spokesman for Virgin Media, formerly NTL/Telewest, admitted that its discs did not yet work with Vista but added that Mr Evans was now using his broadband service.
“We can get people online without the installation disc,” he added. “It’s not that it does not work, it’s just the disc.”
The spokesman said that other net service firms were also known to be taking time to get to grips with Vista.
It’s such a big product that to train staff up on it fully and make sure all your services are tested and compliant takes time,” he said.
A spokesman for BT said: “I think we are now supporting it though we did have some issues with it.”
In particular, he said, Vista was conflicting with the Norton security software that BT sells with some of its broadband bundles.
“That’s now been ironed out,” he added.
The spokesman said BT had created a help page devoted to Vista to make it easier for people to get their PC connected.
Net service firm Tiscali advises its users to back-up important data on their Vista PC before attempting to connect it to broadband.
Andrew Ferguson, editor at Think Broadband, said: “I suspect Vista is going to break a lot of things as it makes some major changes to how things are done in Windows.”
“Many places aren’t up to speed with Vista yet,” he said.

Blog: More Republican2009.10.23. // Uncategorized

The figures show an exceptionally close race, one reason it has taken so long to produce a result.
John McCain beat Barack Obama by a small but significant 3,632 votes, according to the final, (as-yet uncertified) vote count.
The gap between the third and fourth-placed candidates was considerably wider. So Missouri could easily have voted for the winner in 2008 too.
But it didn’t and in fact the writing has been on the wall for Missouri for several years now.
In the past few elections, the state has become increasingly Republican.
In 1996, Missouri voted for Bill Clinton by a margin of 6.3 percentage points, just 2.32 percentage points below Mr Clinton’s national margin of victory
In 2000, that gap grew to 3.86 points, by 2004 it had reached 4.84 points, and in 2008 Missouri was 6.89 points more Republican than the nation as a whole.
What has changed?
Demographically, Missouri used to be a microcosm of America.
With its identical combination of urban centres and rural areas, and a similar racial mix to America as a whole, it was little surprise that Missouri voted along the same lines as the nation.
But America’s racial mix is changing – and Missouri is not keeping up with the changes.
African-Americans make up 11.3% of Missouri’s population, similar to the 12.3% of African-Americans nationwide.
But the fastest-growing ethnic group in America is Hispanic – and Missouri’s Hispanic population is just 3%, compared to the 12.5% national average.
Hispanic voters backed Barack Obama nationally by a ratio of two to one – so Missouri’s relative lack of Hispanics may well have made a difference.
Missouri also has a greater share of evangelical Christian voters than America as a whole, a group that tends to vote Republican.

‘ Blog: Two Colombias’2009.10.23. // Uncategorized

According to government figures, 2.9 million people were displaced between 1997 and 2008.
The government department dedicated to helping such people, Accion Social, said the number seeking to be registered as displaced and therefore qualifying for aid had risen, but often these were for events dating back to the 1980s, 1970s and even 1961.
Accion Social said around a third of the people included in the Codhes figure had in fact been displaced in 2007.
Fraudsters, officials said, had also mounted schemes to register thousands of people as displaced thereby “robbing those really displaced by violence in Colombia of the chance to get help”.
Whatever the actual figures, it is clear that two Colombias are developing under President Alvaro Uribe, says the BBC’s Jeremy McDermott in Medellin.
Towns and cities, where the majority of Colombians live, have become safer under his administration, with murders and kidnappings down.
But in rural areas, where most of the displacement takes place, the situation is as bad, or perhaps worse, than ever, our correspondent says.

Telecoms company Adelphia Communications filed for bankruptcy on 25 June.
The sixth largest American cable television operator is facing regulatory and criminal investigations into its accounting.
The company has restated its profits for the past two years and admitted that it didn’t have as many cable television subscribers as it claimed.
The firm has dismissed its accountants, Deloitte & Touche
In April, the SEC filed a civil suit against photocopy giant Xerox for misstating four years’ worth of profits, resulting in an overstatement of close to $3bn.
Xerox negotiated a settlement with the SEC with regard to the suit.
As part of that agreement, Xerox agreed to pay a $10m fine and restate four years’ worth of trading statements, while neither admitting, nor denying, any wrongdoing.
The penalty is the largest ever imposed by the SEC against a publicly traded firm in relation to accounting misdeeds
