Like Joe’s earlier disquisition on values, this history of the Morgans’ domestic problems was not delivered to me all in so handy a piece as I’ve presented it here. What happened was that, once it got started, our daily equitations changed their character. Now we generally rode silently and with amusing purposefulness directly to the little creek in the pine grove for our talk, and spent as much as an hour there instead of twenty minutes. It is interesting to note that Rennie never spoke of the matter while riding: in fact it was with ill-concealed lack of relish that she mounted Tom Brown every morning. But we always headed for the grove — the horses would doubtless have gone there without our direction, and I will admit that more than once Susie and I took the initiative in heading that way.

Back at the Morgan apartment Rennie would clam up completely unless Joe questioned her directly about our morning. This, of course, he did often, and when it became quite necessary Rennie would lie grimly to him about the nature of our conversation. Grimly and clumsily: it was not pretty to watch. Joe listened carefully, and, as a rule, noncommittally, and sometimes smiled. Probably he knew she was lying, although it is hard for one who is aware of the truth to judge effectively its disguise. But if he knew, it didn’t worry him. He was indeed very strong.

He and I got along better all the time. He argued exuberantly with me about politics, history, music, integrity, logic — everything; we played tennis and gin rummy together, and I proofread two or three improperly split infinitives out of the manuscript of his dissertation — an odd, brilliant study of the saving roles of innocence and energy in American political and economic history. My attitude toward Joe, Rennie, and all the rest of the universe changed as frequently as Laocoön’s smile: some days I was a stock left-wing Democrat, other days I professed horror at the very concept of reform in anything; some days I was ascetic, some days Rabelaisian; some days super-rational, some days anti-rational. Each time I defended myself vehemently (except on my uncommunicative days), and Joe laughed and took me to pieces. It was a pleasant enough way to kill the afternoons, I thought, but Rennie grew increasingly morose as August progressed. At the pine grove she shuddered, rationalized, talked, and wept. She was caught.

Italics by yours truly, not by the “Yours Truly, Huck Finn,” who signs off the single long letter to the reader which is Twain’s novel.

About the first of my qualifiers — the author’s self in his/her fiction — I make two simple observations. The first is that as a narrative convention it has a very long provenance. The contemporary appearance of the author, or of authorial surrogates, in the fiction of Kurt Vonnegut, Philip Roth, John Updike, and Bernard Malamud, for example — to mention only a few American novelists published last year — reminds us of our near contemporaries’ similar inclination to make cameo appearances, sometimes even to take major roles, in their own productions: Borges’s Borges, Nabokov’s Van Veen, and the rest. And they of course are echoing the great modernists’ preoccupation with author-heroes, authorial surrogates, and the Künstlerroman in general: Joyce’s Dedalus, Mann’s Kröger and Aschenbach, Proust’s Marcel, Kafka’s Samsa (at whose simple vowel-and-consonant correspondence to his own surname Kafka felt such an odd, sly uncharacteristic, undergraduate excitement). But the modernists were of course only escalating that foregrounding of authorial self-consciousness which runs from Flaubert through Henry James: that “fall from innocence” on the part of literature which Roland Barthes seems to date from about 3 P.M. on a Tuesday in 1853 or thereabouts and which he exaggerates as follows a hundred years later in Writing Degree Zero

Everyone has a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.

Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the records of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours.

There is no going back. There is no drawing against the “tomorrow”. You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today: “Seize the day!”

So, you see, time is important, make the most of it. After all, life is either a daring adventure or nothing!

Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to have your time. And remember time waits for none.

We got shuttled up the Okahu Valley by the people from the Whirinaki Forest Lodge and spent the day crossing and re-crossing streams that we followed up and down long valleys. On our way we surprised a couple of pairs of blue ducks, or whio (named by the Maori for their whistling call), which was a real treat as they’re not common. The forest of mossy beech trees and ferns with rippling shallow streams felt quite primeval. Being young (younger than now anyway), we continued past the first hut (Whangatawhia or Skips Hut) and over a low saddle to another valley and the Te Wairoa Hut (pictured). It’s a classic back country hut with a corrugated iron chimney and fireplace that function as an expressway for mosquitoes, and it had more possums on the roof than you’d imagine possible.

NEW YORK – Some children get severely obese because they lack particular chunks of DNA, which kicks their hunger into overdrive, researchers report.
The British researchers checked the DNA of 300 children who’d become very fat, on the order of 220 pounds by age 10. They looked for deletions or extra copies of DNA segments.
They found evidence that several rare deletions may promote obesity, including one kind they studied further and found in less than 1 percent of about 1,200 severely obese children.
That deletion, on chromosome 16, apparently causes trouble because it removes a gene that the brain needs to respond to the appetite-controlling hormone leptin, said Dr. Sadaf Farooqi of Cambridge University.
In her study, children with a chromosome 16 DNA deletion “have a very strong drive to eat,” said Farooqi, who co-led the research. “They’re very, very hungry, they always want to eat.”
The work, reported online Sunday by the journal Nature, has already produced a real-world payoff. Farooqi said four children with the chromosome 16 deletion had drawn the attention of British child welfare authorities, who blamed the parents for overfeeding them.
“We were able to intervene” and get the parents of two children off the hook, and the other two cases are under discussion, she said.
That’s happened before when the scientists uncovered genetic causes for severe childhood obesity, she said.
“It’s a slightly unusual outcome of our research, but one we think is very important,” she said.
While scientists had previously discovered particular genes that promote obesity when damaged, the new work looked at larger chunks of DNA that can span several genes. The chromosome 16 deletion includes nine genes.
Eric Ravussin, an obesity expert at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La., who wasn’t involved in the study, said the work provides “a gold mine of information.” That’s because it identifies specific chromosome areas that scientists can explore to discover obesity-related genes, he said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—Ohio State star Evan Turner will miss 8 weeks after breaking bones in his back when he fell while dunking during Saturday’s game against Eastern Michigan.
Initial X-rays indicated no serious injuries, but Buckeyes athletic trainer Vince O’Brien said later tests found transverse process fractures of the second and third lumbar vertebra of Turner’s spine.
“My primary concern right now is Evan’s long-term health and well-being,” said Ohio State coach Thad Matta. “Evan was to this point in the season the best player in college basketball. We have been through tough situations before and our guys will regroup and prepare for the rest of our season starting with Butler next week in Indianapolis.”
The injury occurred after the junior swingman drove the lane and was fouled going up for a dunk with 13:27 left in the first half of the No. 15 Buckeyes’ game against Eastern Michigan.
Turner missed the dunk and hung on the rim with his feet flying into a nearly horizontal position, before falling on his back under the basket. He spent several minutes on the floor before walking with help to the locker room.
The Buckeyes (7-1), leading 15-5 at the time of the spill, went on to a 111-60 victory.
Turner, who came into the game averaging 20.6 points and 12.9 rebounds, was taken to The Ohio State University Medical Center for X-rays of his lower back. Initial tests showed no broken bones or substantial damage, but Matta said Turner would undergo more intensive tests before leaving the hospital. That is when the spinal breaks were noticed.
After the game, Matta said it appeared Turner would be fine.
“Everything looked good on the X-ray,” Matta said. “I haven’t seen the fall yet, but we’re obviously thinking about him and hoping that everything’s going to be OK.”
Turner’s injury marks the second year in a row at almost the same point in the season that one of the Buckeyes’ top players has been sidelined.
Last season, David Lighty, the team captain and most experienced player, broke his foot in the seventh game and missed the rest of the season. The Buckeyes, with Turner playing an increasingly larger role, went 22-11 before losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Turner’s stock rose so high that he considered jumping to the NBA after the season, but elected to return. He recorded two triple doubles in Ohio State’s first five games—the second and third triple-doubles ever for a Buckeye.
Ohio State is off the next week for final exams and will play next at Butler on Saturday.
